A typical tour may last anywhere from 4 hours to 9 hours. Our tours operate around the year, with our highest tourism volume being from April to November. We are always on the lookout for highly-qualified candidates to fill hourly, part-time, and on-call tour guide positions.

Tour Leader Position Summary

Our tour leaders are talented, mature, knowledgeable, responsible, enthusiastic, confident and extremely personable. They’re nothing less than exceptional. Does this sound like you?

You’ll also need to have a fantastic sense of humor, be an efficient and effective communicator, keep an open-mind, radiate an approachable attitude, and be able to utilize problem-solving skills under stress.

We are looking for natural leaders who can use assessment skills, listening skills, direct knowledge, and intuition to act in any given circumstance. If intense and pressure scenarios intimidate you, then this isn’t the job for you. You must be reliable. You must be a team player. You must be both flexible to instruction and an independent thinker.

Ideal candidates will have first-hand knowledge of Colorado and a deep-seeded love of the outdoors.

Responsibilities And Requirements Of Tour Guides
  • Strictly adhere to industry standards and follow company protocol when managing clients.
  • Schedules are diverse; you’ll lead both half and full-day tours in urban and outdoor settings.
  • You’ll spend the majority of your time alone with clients, making it imperative you be a responsible self-starter.
  • Guides will provide knowledgeable, accurate commentary for clients related to the area of tour, which may include geology, ecology, history, and current events relative to the given area.
  • You must be qualified and able to safely operate Mercedes Sprinter vans and Extended SUV’s to transport clients. Vans hold 14 passengers. Driving conditions will not always be ideal in Colorado. Guides must be able to comfortably traverse through heavy traffic, urban traffic, and winter conditions in both urban settings and mountain roads.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and manner of conduct at all times and with all clients, coworkers, and affiliates.
  • Applicants must be a resident of Colorado. No exceptions.
  • Applicants must hold a valid Colorado driver’s license and have a clean driving record.
  • Potential employees must obtain a DOT medical examiner’s certificate, which will include passing a physical and drug screen.
  • College degree is preferred, but equivalent life experience will be considered.
  • Tour guides will have the ability and knowledge to offer all clients a 5-Star experience, without prejudice. Clients will come from an array of backgrounds and cultures. They’ll also be of various ages and physical conditions. It’s vital our guides be able to appropriately interact with and implement tours to cover a diverse clientele.
  • You must be able to safely lift 30 lbs unassisted.
Special Considerations

At Explorer Tours, we seek out the most qualified and talented guides possible. As such, we will give special consideration to candidates with our desired, albeit not required, qualifications. These include:

  • At least a year of experience in a group facilitating, team building, and/or leadership development role.
  • Experience of at least a year as an interpretive guide, educator, or outdoor tour leader.
  • Specialty knowledge, application, or education in a naturalist field, such as geology, botany, birding, anthropology, or glaciology.

Applicants will find our pay structure very competitive. Of course, pay grades are based on experience. Pay is an hourly rate. Bonuses are available.
